A festival volunteer told me her 2007 performance here went over so well, that they flew her and band out here for this special end of summer appearance.

The great Patti Smith opens the show with this searching number from her 1996 album Gone Again. Joined by Lenny Kaye on guitar and Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, it was a great introduction to someone I've never explored beyond "Because the Night". She was passionate and alive and her band was with her every step of the way this summer evening at the Santa Monica Pier.
